Introductory Scuba Diving in Réunion: What to Expect on Your First Dive in Saint-Leu
Would you like to explore Réunion Island’s underwater world but have never breathed underwater before? An introductory scuba dive lets you experience diving for the first time, with no previous experience required. In Saint-Leu, on the island’s west coast, Excelsus Plongée helps you discover the marine environment at your own pace.
The idea is simple: after a friendly welcome and a briefing designed for beginners, you head out by boat to a site selected by the team. You then experience scuba diving with the individual attention of a French state-qualified diving instructor.
Here is what to expect from your first dive and how to prepare for your trip.
What is an introductory scuba dive?
An introductory dive is your first experience of scuba diving. It gives you the chance to take your first breaths underwater and explore the seabed without committing to a full training course.
Unlike snorkelling, which takes place at the surface using a mask and snorkel, scuba diving allows you to explore underwater while breathing through a regulator connected to a cylinder of air.
You do not need to know how the equipment works before you arrive. Your instructor explains everything you need to know and accompanies you throughout the dive.
The aim is simply to get comfortable and enjoy the discovery, with no performance targets to meet.
Why try your first scuba dive in Saint-Leu?
On Réunion Island’s west coast, Saint-Leu offers underwater scenery where volcanic formations meet coral reefs.
There is much more to a first dive than watching fish. The light beneath the surface, the shapes of the reef and the sensation of moving in three dimensions are all part of the experience.
At Excelsus, we choose the dive site according to sea conditions and the participants. Your introductory dive takes place at a colourful site rich in marine life, sheltered from wind, swell and currents.
You can explore the area’s underwater scenery on our page about Saint-Leu’s dive sites.
How does an introductory dive with Excelsus work?
1. Welcome and equipment preparation
At the meeting time specified in your booking confirmation, we take the time to get to know you and prepare your equipment.
This is the perfect opportunity to tell us what you are looking forward to and share any concerns. Are you excited to see the fish? Wondering how to breathe through a regulator? Worried about feeling comfortable with a mask? Let us know so we can give you the support you need.
We then fit your equipment and explain how to use it.
2. A briefing covering the essentials
Before you enter the water, your instructor explains the basics you need for your first dive:
How to breathe through the regulator.
The hand signals used to communicate underwater.
How to signal discomfort or ask to end the dive.
The instructions to follow during the descent and while exploring the site.
You are welcome to ask questions or have anything explained again. There is no need to start with unanswered questions.
3. The boat trip and your first moments in the water
The boat takes you to the site selected by the team.
Once in the water, you gradually get used to the equipment and to breathing through the regulator. These first moments help you find your bearings before continuing.
Some people feel comfortable straight away; others need a little more time. Your instructor adapts their approach to how you feel.
4. Exploring the underwater world
When you are ready, you gradually descend with your instructor.
They provide one-to-one support and oversee the dive, leaving you free to focus on your breathing, the sensations and your surroundings.
The first moments are often spent getting used to something entirely new: breathing underwater. Then your attention turns to the reef, the fish and the details you cannot see from the surface.
5. Returning and sharing your experience
After the dive, you return to the boat and then to the harbour.
This is a chance to share your impressions and ask questions about what you saw. An unusual shape on the reef, a colourful fish or a new sensation: chatting after the dive is also part of the pleasure of discovering scuba diving.
What can you see on an introductory dive in Réunion?
Saint-Leu’s reefs are home to tropical fish and corals. Depending on the site and the day’s encounters, a turtle may also make an appearance.
However, diving takes place in a natural environment, so sightings of any particular species cannot be guaranteed.
Take time to notice the smaller details, too. A fish hiding in a crevice or sunlight playing across the underwater landscape can make a first dive just as memorable as a more spectacular encounter.
Throughout the dive, we observe animals without chasing or touching them and avoid all contact with the corals.
Can you try scuba diving if you feel nervous?
It is common to feel apprehensive before your first dive. Breathing underwater is a new experience, and it is natural to have questions.
Simply let your instructor know. They can go over the explanations again, give you time to get familiar with the equipment and adjust the pace.
You can signal discomfort at any time. An introductory dive should be something you choose to enjoy, without pressure.
If you are unsure about your confidence in the water or whether the activity is suitable for you, contact our team before booking so we can discuss it.
What is the minimum age?
At Excelsus Plongée, introductory dives are available for children aged 8 and over.
Each child receives individual attention tailored to their needs. Their willingness to participate matters: explain the activity simply and give them the opportunity to ask their own questions.
Coming with family or friends? Let us know when you book so we can plan your visit.
How much time should you allow, and what does it cost?
An introductory scuba dive with Excelsus costs €90 per person, including equipment and instructor supervision.
Allow around 3 hours for the outing, including approximately 20 minutes underwater. The remaining time covers preparation, the briefing, the boat trip and organising each participant’s turn in the water.
For current details and booking information, visit our introductory scuba diving in Saint-Leu page.
What happens if sea conditions prevent diving?
The programme depends on actual conditions at sea. A sunny day on land does not necessarily mean that conditions are suitable for beginners.
If conditions prevent your introductory dive from taking place, our team will contact you to offer an alternative date. If no suitable alternative can be arranged, the activity will be refunded.
Booking your dive towards the beginning of your stay can make rescheduling easier if needed.
Can you continue diving after an introductory dive?
Absolutely! Your first underwater experience may leave you wanting to dive again or learn to take a more active role in your diving.
Depending on your goals and how much time you have, we can recommend a further introductory session or a scuba diving course, such as the Open Water Diver course.
You can also simply enjoy your introductory dive as a one-off experience during your holiday.
